Questions
Frequently asked questions
What people ask us most before the first session.
Do you take my insurance?
We don't take Medi-Cal or Medicare. With some PPO plans it depends on the therapist; before the first session we tell you which applies to you. It is all explained in How fees work.
What is a superbill and how do I use it?
It is a monthly receipt with the dates and type of session. You send it to your plan to ask for reimbursement. Your plan decides whether it reimburses anything, and the receipt carries a diagnosis code your insurer can see.
What is a Good Faith Estimate?
If you pay without insurance, you have the right to receive a written estimate of what your care will cost before you begin. If the final bill is $400 or more above the estimate, you can dispute it. The estimate is not a contract.
How much does it cost, and how do fees work?
The fee depends on the therapist and the length of the session. We give it to you in writing before you start, and there is no contract and no payment in advance. A limited number of reduced-fee spots are available.
Can I use an HSA or FSA card?
Yes. We take HSA and FSA cards like any other card, at the end of each session.
What happens in the first session?
It is a conversation to get to know each other. You share what you wish, and your therapist explains how they work, how your privacy is protected and what could come next. You don't have to decide anything that day.
How often, and how long is a session?
An individual session is 50 minutes and a couple's or two-generation session together is 80. How often we meet is decided by you and your therapist, and it can change.
Are you licensed where I live?
Our therapists are licensed in California. We see people by video only if they are in California during the session. Each therapist's license is listed at the foot of every page.
What do I do in a crisis?
Call or text 988 at any hour; for Spanish, press 2 or text AYUDA. In an emergency, call 911. This site and our email are not monitored around the clock.
What is confidential, and what are the limits?
What you say in session is private. The law asks your therapist to act if there is serious danger to you or to someone else, or if abuse of a child, an older adult or a person with a disability is suspected. We explain this in more detail in the first session.
Do you see my teenage son or daughter?
Heath sees adults who are 18 or older. If you are looking for help for a child under 18, write to us and we will give you names of colleagues who see young people.
What is your cancellation policy?
We ask for 24 hours' notice to change or cancel an appointment. If that isn't possible, tell us as soon as you can and we will talk it through.
