Two generations

Parents and adult children, each in their own language

For a mother or father and an adult son or daughter who want to understand each other better, without anyone having to translate.

In some families the parents think in Spanish and the children, even if they understand it, talk in English. Sometimes that weighs more than any topic. These sessions are set up so that neither person has to speak in the language that sits farther from them.

You can talk about

  • How to look after each other as parents age

  • What each generation expects of the other

  • Family decisions: money, the house, moving

  • Things that haven't been said in years

Three ways to begin

Together, apart, or both

None is required, and you can move from one to another whenever you like.

  • First, a session each

Each person has a session of their own, in their language, with their own therapist. What is said there is not shared with the other person.

  • Then, a session together

If you both want to, you sit in the same room with a therapist who speaks Spanish and English. Each of you speaks in the language you prefer.

  • Or only together

You can also start with an 80-minute joint session, with no separate sessions, if that feels more comfortable.

Who sees you

Sessions are built with two therapists from the team

  • Amalia Urquidez

Sees mothers and fathers in Spanish and can lead the joint session.

  • Cesia Zúñiga

Sees adult sons and daughters in English and joins the joint session when the family asks.

Questions

Three questions about two generations

What if my mother or father doesn't want to come?

You can come on your own, without them. Nobody has to bring anybody, and what you say in your session is private.

What language is used when we come together?

Whichever each of you prefers. The therapist speaks Spanish and English, so nobody translates and nobody is left out.

Is what I say in my session shared with my family?

No. What you say is private, with the legal limits we explain in the first session. Only what you choose to share in a joint session is shared.

How are two-generation sessions paid for?

Each session is paid for separately, and we give you the fee in writing before you start. It is all in How fees work.
