Boyle Heights, Los Angeles

Therapy with room for parents and adult children

Heath is an office in Boyle Heights, Los Angeles, where we speak Spanish first. We see adults, couples and two-generation families, in person or by video.

Who it's for

Two generations, one conversation

Many families come to Heath separately: parents talk in Spanish and adult children sometimes prefer English. Here each person starts in their own language, and the two of you together when you decide to.

  • If you are a mother or father

An hour for you, in Spanish and unhurried. You can talk about the distance from your children, about so many years of work, or about whatever you choose.

  • If you are an adult son or daughter

Sessions in English, Spanish or both. To talk about what it is to carry two cultures, to look after your parents, and to set limits with love.

  • If you want to come together

A session with both of you in the same room, only if both want it. A therapist who speaks both languages helps each of you be heard.

How we begin

From your message to the first session

  • 01

    You write or call

Tell us the language and the time you prefer for our reply. There is nothing else you need to explain.

  • 02

    We confirm a time

We suggest a therapist and a time, in person or by video, and send you in writing how sessions are paid.

  • 03

    The first session

A conversation to get to know each other. You share what you wish and your therapist explains how they work and what comes next.

  • 04

    A pace that suits you

You and your therapist decide how often to meet. You can change the pace, the therapist or the language whenever you need.

How fees work

Answers to what almost everyone asks before the first session. No amounts on this page: you get your fee in writing.

  • Insurance

Heath does not take Medi-Cal (California's Medicaid) or Medicare. With private plans, some of our therapists are in network with certain PPO plans and others are not: before the first session we tell you which applies to you.

    • Some PPO plans, depending on the therapist

    • No Medi-Cal or Medicare

  • If you pay yourself

Payment is made at the end of each session, by card, including HSA and FSA cards. There is no contract and nothing is paid in advance. The fee depends on the therapist and the length of the session: 50 minutes for an individual one and 80 for a couple's or a two-generation session together. We give it to you in writing before you start. A limited number of reduced-fee spots are available; ask how to request one. We ask for 24 hours' notice to change or cancel an appointment.

  • A receipt for reimbursement

Each month we give you an itemized receipt (a superbill) with the dates and type of session, so you can send it to your plan, which may reimburse part of it. The receipt carries a diagnosis code your insurer can see. Your plan decides whether it reimburses anything: ask it before you start.

  • Good Faith Estimate

If you pay without insurance, you have the right to receive a written estimate of what your care will cost before you begin. We give it to you before the first session. If the final bill is $400 or more above the estimate, you can dispute it. The estimate is not a contract.

  • Checking your benefits

With the plans we take, we check your benefits before the first session and tell you what to expect for your copay and deductible. With the others, call your plan and ask about out-of-network mental health services.

Amalia Urquidez

Founder and therapist

She sees adults, couples and two-generation families, in Spanish and English.

Amalia opened Heath so that families on the east side of Los Angeles have a place to talk in the language of their home. In session she listens first and suggests second. If you ask, she explains plainly which method she uses, how she learned it and what she will not do.

Questions

What people ask us most

Do you take my insurance?

We don't take Medi-Cal or Medicare. With some PPO plans it depends on the therapist; before the first session we tell you which applies to you. It is all explained in How fees work.

What is a superbill and how do I use it?

It is a monthly receipt with the dates and type of session. You send it to your plan to ask for reimbursement. Your plan decides whether it reimburses anything, and the receipt carries a diagnosis code your insurer can see.

What is a Good Faith Estimate?

If you pay without insurance, you have the right to receive a written estimate of what your care will cost before you begin. If the final bill is $400 or more above the estimate, you can dispute it. The estimate is not a contract.

How much does it cost, and how do fees work?

The fee depends on the therapist and the length of the session. We give it to you in writing before you start, and there is no contract and no payment in advance. A limited number of reduced-fee spots are available.

Can I use an HSA or FSA card?

Yes. We take HSA and FSA cards like any other card, at the end of each session.

What happens in the first session?

It is a conversation to get to know each other. You share what you wish, and your therapist explains how they work, how your privacy is protected and what could come next. You don't have to decide anything that day.

Write to us

Tell us how you'd like to begin

We reply within one business day, in Spanish or English. If you'd rather talk by phone first, we offer a 15-minute call to see whether we are the right place; it is not therapy or an evaluation.
